Japan’s PM Kishada tests positive for Covid

Tokyo, 21 (EFE).- Japan’s prime minister Fumio Kishida has tested positive for Covid and is experiencing mild symptoms, his office reported on Sunday.

Kishida, 65, developed a slight fever and cough late on Saturday and is currently resting at his residence, the premier’s office added.

The PM is expected to continue with his duties on Monday by working remotely and in isolation so long as his symptoms do not worsen.

The Japanese head of government has tested positive at a time when the nation is in the midst of a seventh wave of Covid cases with infections at an all-time high.

Kishida had planned to attend the Tokyo International Conference on African Development in Tunisia on August 27 and 28, but because Japanese law requires an isolation period of 10 days, the premier could instead take part virtually.

The prime minister, who was on vacation this week, was also scheduled to visit several Middle Eastern countries after the conference. EFE
