Taiwan extends Covid-19 restrictions to June 14

Shanghai, China, May 25 (EFE).- Taiwan has extended Covid-19 restrictions until at least June 14 due to a spike in local cases.

The island’s health authorities on Tuesday added 544 new infections to the overall caseload, of which 283 related to the last 24 hours and two were detected in foreign arrivals. There were six Covid-related deaths on Monday.

Given the uptick in local transmission, authorities decided to maintain the measures associated with national alert level 3, which means non-essential businesses must remain closed. Thus far the government has declined to order lockdowns.

Health Minister Chen Shih-chung said the territory would receive two million doses of Covid-19 vaccines in June and “millions more” until the end of August. The minister said Taiwan should have 10 million vaccines by the end of the summer.

Taiwan managed to curtail the spread of Covid-19 at the beginning of the pandemic by swiftly closing its borders to foreign travel not long after the first cases were detected in the Chinese city of Wuhan.

A recent surge in cases, particularly around the capital Taipei, has brought the island’s overall caseload to 5,456.EFE
