Fallece joven latina bajo custodia de ‘La Migra’

TEXAS (BuzzFeed News) — A 22-year-old Guatemalan woman who passed her initial asylum screening and was in detention for several months died in Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody at a Texas hospital Sunday, according to a source with knowledge of the matter.

The death is the eighth in ICE custody in the 2020 fiscal year, which began Oct. 1, and equals the number of deaths for the entire 2019 fiscal year.

The woman had been arrested by Border Patrol officials in early September after crossing into Texas without authorization, according to the source. A few weeks later, asylum officers determined that she had passed a “credible fear” screening, the source said.

In these screenings, immigrants must prove there is a significant possibility that they have a valid fear of persecution or torture in their home country. It’s the first step in a long process to gain protections in the US, one that has come under scrutiny from Trump administration officials.

ICE officials kept her in custody at a facility in Oklahoma. The agency has detained thousands of immigrants who have passed their initial asylum screenings, a practice that in the past generally led to them being released from custody.

On Feb. 7, the woman was taken from detention to a hospital in Oklahoma, where she was admitted. Two days later, she had her gallbladder surgically removed, the source said. On Feb. 10, she was returned to a detention center in Oklahoma, then taken to another detention facility in Texas on Feb. 13, the source said. On Feb. 18, officials took her to a hospital in Texas for treatment for abdominal pain. From that point on, she remained in the care of Texas hospitals until she was pronounced dead Sunday, the source said.

TEXAS (La Opinión) — Una mujer guatemalteca de 22 años falleció en un hospital de Texas cuando se encontraba bajo custodia del Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas (ICE, por sus siglas en inglés), de acuerdo con un reporte de la web informativa BuzzFeed News.

Se trata de la octava muerte de una persona retenida por esta agencia federal en lo que va de año fiscal (que arranca el día 1 de octubre), la misma cifra que la de todo el año fiscal anterior. En cuatro de los ocho casos la causa de muerte fue suicidio (en el anterior período sólo hubo dos muertes por esta causa).

La citada web informativa asegura que la joven cruzó irregularmente la frontera sur en Texas y fue detenida por la Patrulla Fronteriza a principios de septiembre de 2019.

Algunas semanas después, funcionarios migratorios consideraron que la mujer, cuyo nombre no ha sido difundido, superó de manera favorable la prueba de miedo, en la que los migrantes tienen que demostrar que tienen temores justificados de sufrir persecuciones o torturas en su país de origen. Estas pruebas representan uno de los primeros pasos en el proceso para la obtención de asilo.

Tras pasar algunos meses detenida en una instalación de ICE en Oklahoma, la mujer fue trasladada a principios de febrero a un hospital en el mismo estado, donde el día 9 fue sometida a una cirugía para la extirpación de la vesícula biliar.

Posteriormente a la operación, la joven fue devuelta a la custodia de las autoridades migratorias, primero en Oklahoma, y a partir del día 13, en Texas. El día 18 de febrero los agentes la trasladaron a un hospital de este estado para que recibiera tratamiento por un dolor abdominal. A partir de ese momento, la joven quedó atendida por el sistema sanitario de Texas hasta que fue declarada muerta el domingo, 8 de marzo.
