Guterres proposes 4-day Orthodox Easter truce in Ukraine

United Nations, Apr 19 (EFE).- The United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, strongly urged on Tuesday for Russia and Ukraine to agree on a four-day ceasefire during Orthodox Easter between April 21 and 24.

“I am calling for an Orthodox Holy Week humanitarian pause to the war in Ukraine,” Guterres said.

“I urge all parties – and all champions of peace around the world – to join my Easter appeal,” he added.

The truce, coordinated with the International Committee of the Red Cross, would allow the evacuation of civilians and delivery of humanitarian aid to populations of eastern Ukraine, mainly Mariupol, Kherson, Donetsk and Lugansk.

Guterres said the involved parties were being informed of a detailed proposal, without revealing whether or not he has already received a response.

He added 15.7 million people in Ukraine will be in need of humanitarian assistance in the near future soon. EFE
