Kroger Unveils Its ‘Store of The Future’

Kroger presenta su 'tienda del futuro'

CINCINATTI, OH (Memphis Business Journal) — Kroger Co. unveiled its “store of the future” on Oct. 20, testing the concept in Cincinnati.

Kroger, which is based in Cincinnati, launched the new store concept about a week ago but made it official with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday morning.

The changes involve the way customers check out. The new concept gives customers a variety of options that include a group of Kroger’s new high-tech modes of checkout as well as the traditional low-tech methods.

Customers at the new concept store now have the ability to use Kroger’s KroGo carts that have built-in scales and cameras. They enable customers to scan groceries as they shop, pay at the cart and completely skip the checkout line. Kroger, the nation’s largest traditional supermarket operator, has tested those high-tech carts in a few markets.

Additionally, customers can use the belted self-checkout lanes Kroger has also tested recently in a few markets, including at some stores in Cincinnati, Rolfes said. Those are similar to Kroger’s typical self-checkout lanes, but they have conveyor belts that are useful for larger orders. If two people are shopping, one can scan the items and the other can bag them.

If the test works well, Kroger plans to expand it. It would bring the concept to about six Greater Cincinnati stores next year as well as some in Columbus, Ohio, she said.

Kroger has invested billions of dollars in technology in recent years. That has ranged from expanding its digital capabilities to handle delivery and customer pickup orders to in-store checkout technology like what it has added at the new concept store.

Kroger is in the midst of trying to get regulatory approval for a $25 billion acquisition it agreed to last week with Boise, Idaho-based Albertsons Cos., the nation’s second-largest operator of traditional supermarkets.

Kroger is one of Memphis’ largest employers, with more than 30 metro locations. The Kroger Delta Division is based in Memphis and has more than 2,600 employees, as of July 2022, according to MBJ research.
