EU health officials push for booster jabs amid soaring infection rates

Madrid Desk, Nov 24 (EFE).- The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control on Wednesday urged governments to speed up administration of booster jabs to protect the vulnerable as Europe struggles to contain surging Covid-19 infection rates amid a polarized reaction to vaccine mandates and restrictions.

The health authority warned that without decisive action, the months of December and January could see the delta variant flood hospitals with patients.

“There are still too many individuals at risk of severe Covid-19 infection whom we need to protect as soon as possible. We need to urgently focus on closing this immunity gap, offer booster doses to all adults, and reintroduce non-pharmaceutical measures,” ECDC director Andrea Ammon warned.

GERMANY

German officials imposed new restrictions on Wednesday to battle a fourth Covid wave, which has seen a surge in infection rates across several states.

One of the measures is the so-called 3G rules (vaccinated, recovered or tested) which requires people to prove a full vaccination record, recovery from Covid or a valid negative test in order to access public transport or the workplace.

The new legislation, which was approved by the federal government, will be in place until March 19.

RUSSIA

In an open letter, a group of leading Russian doctors urged politicians and celebrities who promote anti-vaccine views to visit Covid-19 wards so they could see the devastating impact of the disease for themselves.

The letter published by the Russian state news agency Tass said: “Given how many people read and listen to you, we will find time to escort you through the red zones, intensive care units, and pathology departments of our hospitals.”
