Barty, Sabalenka progress to Wimbledon quarterfinals, Swiatek out

Sports Desk, Jul 5 (EFE).- Ashleigh Barty on Monday defeated Barbora Krejcikova in straight sets to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals, her best run yet at the All England Club.

The first-ranked needed one hour and 35 minutes to earn a 7-5, 6-3 victory on her bid to a second consecutive singles Grand Slam title following her French Open win.

“That was a tough match – Barbora has had an incredible year,” the Australian said afterwards. “I’m just happy to come through in the end. I found some pretty good stuff when I needed it most, which is great.”

The 2019 French Open champion will take on either Canada’s Emma Raducanu or her fellow countrywoman Ajla Tomljanovic for a third major semifinal appearance, having also reached the last 4 at the 2019 Australian Open.

Second-seed Aryna Sabalenka dropped a set but secured her maiden appearance at a Grand Slam quarterfinal with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 win over Kazakh Elena Rybakina.

The 23-year-old will play Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur, who pulled off yet another upset by knocking out seventh-seed Polish player Iga Swiatek, having axed the US’ Venus Williams and Spaniard Garbiñe Muguruza in the second and third rounds respectively.

Also in the quarterfinals, Karolina Pliskova, the eighth seed, will face Swiss Viktorija Golubic, while former world No.1 Angelique Kerber of Germany will take on Karolína Muchova of the Czech Republic. EFE
