Chattanooga’s Latin American Market

Por/By Verónica V. Herrera

This time we’re going to talk about a Culture Philanthropy project that is designed to unify the community and to promote economic development. It is the first Chattanooga’s Latin American Market event ever, which will take place on Saturday, July 16th, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the neighborhood of Ridgedale. In it, individuals may sell traditional foods, used items in the flea market section, crafts and art creations.

Chattanooga’s Latin American Market will be possible thanks to the sponsorship from the McCallie School, who will let us use their community center at no charge. Other sponsors include Coca-Cola Bottling Company UNITED, Chattanooga Neighborhood Enterprise (CNE), EducQ Marketing, Tepuy Venezuelan Cuisine and the Latin radio station, ¡Qué Buena!101.9 FM of Dalton, Georgia. There will be no cost to participants for setting up a kiosk, the only requirement is that they speak to customers in Spanish.

The objectives of the event are: 1) to promote sales (informal economy) and 2) to open up a space for people to practice Spanish in a fun way as they shop. By sharing language we are encouraging others to enjoy our culture, Culture Philanthropy. Not only will we be helping people develop their communication skills, but we will be providing wholeheartedly our happiness through the unique cultural characteristics of this event.

We are also aiming at leaving a positive image of what we stand for as a cultural group; because as the great philosopher Aristotle asserted: “Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.” We are a kind and loving culture, with the ability to educate others about the beauty of our heritage through positive activities like this “mercado.” Stay tuned for future articles in the next few weeks, as we will have a report about our experiences and effective strategies for you to organize a similar event in your community.
