COMMISSIONER BRITNEY THORNTON PRESENTS NEW BLIGHT REMEDIATION CAMPAIGN CALLED “SHINE BLIGHT!” ACROSS DISTRICT 10 IN HONOR OF LATE ELIZA FLETCHER

COMISIONADA BRITNEY THORNTON PRESENTA CAMPAÑA DE LIMPIEZA LLAMADA “SHINE BLIGHT!” EN HONOR DE LA FALLECIDA ELIZA FLETCHER

MEMPHIS, TN (City of Memphis) — On Tuesday, September 6th, the kidnapped mother of two, Eliza Fletcher, was found murdered and abandoned near a blighted property in South Memphis (1666 Victor Street).  A 69-year-old neighbor who lives on East Person just three houses away from where Liza’s body was found commented that the blighted home had been vacant for at least a decade.  Notably, the previous tenant of 1666 Victor was an elderly man who moved out after his property was burglarized. Moreover, the East Person resident mentioned worsening crime, discomfort in her own home and community, and discontent with the negative behavior attracted by the blight in her neighborhood.

Commissioner Britney Thornton is the newly elected County Commissioner for District 10.  Drawing from previous experience as an organizer with the nonprofit JUICE Orange Mound, Thornton drew inspiration to act from a community project called “Mow the Mound.”  Back in 2020, JUICE funded the remediation of dozens of overgrown lots across Historic Orange Mound by using local service providers and input from current residents to identify eyesores.  Ultimately, 7 small Black-owned businesses were selected to service over 70 excessively overgrown parcels across 7 zones.  Costing $15,000, the investment had a lasting impact due to the timing at the end of the grass growing season.  The Shine Blight! Campaign seeks to scale and replicate the Mow the Mound model of neighborhood blight remediation.
