Sports Desk, Feb 8 (efe-epa).- Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton has signed a new contract to keep him with the Mercedes Formula One team for the 2021 season.
The move was widely expected and finalizes the grid for the coming season with the Brit keeping his seat alongside Finnish teammate Valtteri Bottas.
“I am excited to be heading into my ninth season with my Mercedes teammates. Our team has achieved incredible things together and we look forward to building on our success even further, while continuously looking to improve, both on and off the track,” Hamilton said in a statement.
He added that he was “equally excited” to build upon the commitment with Mercedes to boost diversity and inclusivity in the elite motorsport.
Toto Wolff, Mercedes team principal, added: “The story of Mercedes and Lewis has written itself into the history books of our sport over the past eight seasons, and we are hungry to compete and to add more chapters to it.”
Hamilton, 36, equaled Michael Schumacher’s career record of seven drivers’ titles in the 2020 season. The Brit also holds the record for most career wins — 95 —, again surpassing the German legend’s tally last year.EFE
