Mexico doctors protest female colleague’s murder

Mexico City, Jul 12 (EFE).- Doctors and students protested on Tuesday in Mexico’s Ciudad Juarez over the alleged murder of one of their female colleagues the previous day.

The healthcare workers demanded that the authorities provide them safer working conditions and justice for the murder of anesthesiologist, Masiel Mexia Medina.

The protesters carried banners that read: “We are missing one, Masiel Mexia,” “The dead give no consultation” and “dignified and safe places.”

The doctor, who worked at the Mexican Social Security Institute in the town of San Juanito in Chihuahua state’s Bocoyna municipality was shot dead at home on Monday.

On Tuesday, the attorney general’s office of Chihuahua announced that it was informed by the private security personnel of the IMSS Hospital of San Juanito at 5.45 am on Monday that a woman with gunshot wounds had been admitted.

The office said that upon going to the hospital, they found a person identified as Masiel M. M., 38 years old, with gunshot wounds to the head and chest and without vital signs.

The office said that, according to preliminary information, the doctor was originally from the state of Sinaloa and lived alone in the La Pistan neighborhood in San Juanito.

It added that, according to witnesses, “a subject identified as an inhabitant of that same place, is the one who appears to be responsible for having entered the doctor’s home and shot her.”

This man was identified because he had previously entered another home armed, the attorney general’s office said.

It added that on Monday evening, at approximately 5pm, a man was found beaten and tied to a pole. Nearby lay an AK-47 type weapon and cardboard with the message: “This happened to you for killing the doctor and raping a girl.”

He was taken to the hospital for medical attention and investigations into the case are underway, according to the office.

The number of femicides and violence against women has been on the rise in Mexico in recent years along with an increasing rate of impunity that allows perpetrators and murderers to go free.

An average of more than 10 women are killed every day in the country due to gender-based violence.

The Mexican government recorded 1,004 victims of femicide in the country in 2021, 2.66 percent more than in 2020. EFE
