Singapore to decriminalize sex between men
Singapore, Aug 21 (EFE).- Singapore will decriminalize sex between men and repeal the law that prohibits it, prime minister Lee Hsien Loong announced on Sunday.
“I believe this is the right thing to do, and something that most Singaporeans will now accept,” he said in a televised address.
Lee did not specify when Section 377A of Singapore’s penal code that punishes sex between men with up to two years in prison would be revoked.
The LGBTQ community in Singapore has been fighting for years to get the law that dates back to the British colonial era removed.
The premier’s announcement comes 15 years after the parliament last debated Section 377A in 2007 when it decided the law would remain in place but not be actively enforced.
The law stipulates that only marriages between men and women is recognized in Singapore, Lee stressed.EFE
