BA halts sale of short-haul flights from Heathrow

London, Aug 2 (EFE).- British Airways on Tuesday said it had halted the sale of tickets for short-haul flights from Heathrow for a week, as the London airport continues to struggle with a spike in demand and issues with baggage handling systems.

The move came after the United Kingdom travel hub urged airlines to limit reservations following a measure that was introduced in early July that capped the number of daily passengers to 100,000, some 4,000 fewer travelers than originally scheduled, due to staffing issues and increased demand in air travel after a two-year pandemic hiatus.

“As a result of Heathrow’s request to limit new bookings, we’ve decided to take responsible action and limit the available fares on some Heathrow services to help maximize rebooking options for existing customers, given the restrictions imposed on us and the ongoing challenges facing the entire aviation industry,” BA said in a statement.

The short-haul flights affected by the restriction will include domestic and European routes.

Airlines in Europe have canceled thousands of flights this summer as the industry grapples with staff shortages and increased travel demand following years of restrictions due to the Covid-19 health crisis. EFE
