Spanish Ryanair staff announce fresh strikes as summer season gets underway

Madrid, Jul 2 (EFE).- Ryanair cabin crew in Spain on Saturday announced fresh strikes for the month of July as the summer travel period kicks off in the popular tourist destination.

The USO and Sitcpla unions announced 12 days of strikes from July 12-15, 18-21 and 25-28 in 10 Spanish airports — Madrid, Malaga, Seville, Alicante, Valencia, Barcelona, Girona, Santiago de Compostela, Ibiza and Palma de Mallorca.

The secretary general of USO, Lidia Arasanz, said the unions had been “obligated” to schedule more industrial action this month having just brought to a close six days of strikes that led to the cancellation of 200 flights and nearly a thousand delays across Spain.

Ryanair’s budget competitor Easyjet is also witnessing strike action by its cabin crew over pay and conditions.

The announcement comes as Spain enters its busy holiday season, with 24,600 flights scheduled to take off between Friday and Monday, according to Aena, which manages the country’s airports. EFE
