Anti-lockdown protesters clash with police in Rome

Rome, Apr 6 (efe-epa).- Anti-lockdown protesters on Tuesday took to the streets of several Italian cities, including Rome, where clashes broke out with police in front of the Chamber of Deputies.

The protesters, mainly made up of workers in sectors that have been affected by coronavirus restrictions including restaurants, hotels, gyms, and street vendors, tried to break through security barriers outside the parliament building and threw objects at the police, who responded by firing smoke canisters.

The security forces managed to contain the protesters, some of whom were arrested, while one policeman was injured, according to local media.

After those tense scenes had been diffused, the protesters, most of whom were not wearing masks or respecting social distancing rules, continued with the rally, chanting slogans including “jokers” and “freedom, freedom”.

Similar rallies took place in Milan, where there were some tense moments as the protesters, including employees of the tourist sector, blocked traffic as they demanded “work”, “immediate restoration” and “reopening” of the country’s economy. EFE-EPA
