French unions launch new round of protests, strikes against pension reforms

Paris, Feb 16 (EFE).- French unions on Thursday called another round of strikes and protests against pension reforms proposed by president Emmanuel Macron’s government that would see the minimum retirement age raised from 62 to 64 years.

The draft bill is currently being debated in parliament.

It was the fifth day of mobilizations since the government unveiled its plans in January.

The main rally was held in the southwestern town of Albi, the birthplace of iconic socialist politician Jean Jaures, where unions expected 30,000 people to turn out.

Protests were also held in the capital, Paris, as well as cities such as Rennes in Brittany and Montpellier and Marseilles in the south, where 90,000 people were expected to attend.

The strikes, which were less widespread than previous ones in recent weeks, saw 14% of national rail workers walk out.

Teachers and students, who made up large numbers during the previous rounds of mobilizations, were absent from rallies on Thursday because schools are on holiday this week.EFE
