Rocket explosions hit Jerusalem with Israeli parliament in session

Jerusalem, Oct 16 (EFE).- Several explosions rocked Jerusalem on Monday while a session of the Knesset (Israel’s parliament), which Israeli prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was attending, was being held.

No casualties or serious damage were reported and, according to Israeli media, the Jerusalem-based Parliament had to interrupt its session and deputies had to take shelter.

Anti-aircraft sirens, usually triggered by rockets launched from Gaza by the Islamist group Hamas, also sounded in central Israel and Tel Aviv, the Israeli army confirmed.

The Israeli emergency services, Magen David Adom, reported that they had treated and transported to a hospital a 54-year-old woman with shrapnel wounds in the Holon area outside Tel Aviv.

The Al Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, claimed responsibility for the rocket fire on Israel’s two major cities.

Tensions have risen sharply since Hamas launched a land, sea and air attack from Gaza on Oct. 7 that killed at least 1,400 people, the vast majority of them civilians.

Israel has responded with an intense shelling of the Gaza Strip for 10 days, killing at least 2,750 Palestinians and wounding 9,700. EFE
