Spurs thrash Arsenal 3-0 to remain in contention for CL berth

Sports Desk, May 12 (EFE).- Harry Kane had a brace Thursday to power Tottenham Hotspur past Arsenal 3-0, leaving the sides two separated by just a point as they battle for fourth place in the Premier League and the ticket to the Champions League that comes with it.

With 66 points, the Gunners can retain the spot if they win both of their final two games of the season against Newcastle United and Everton, respectively.

Spurs, who have a goal difference of plus-23 compared with plus-11 for Arsenal, host 17th-place Burnley on Sunday and will end the season with a visit to already relegated Norwich City.

The first North London derby played in front of a full house at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium could not have gone better for the hosts.

In the 21st minute, Arsenal’s Cedric fouled Heung-min Son as he went up for Dejan Kulusevski’s cross and the referee pointed to the spot. Kane converted to put Spurs up 1-0.

The contest was in the 33rd minute when the Gunners went down to 10 men with the expulsion of Rob Holding after he fouled Son for the second time in a span of seven minutes.

Kane got his double in the 37th minute with a diving header and Son made it 3-0 early in the second half with his 21st league goal of the season, just one fewer than Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah. EFE msg/dr
