Health Department Monitoring Valero Burn-Off Incident

SHELBY COUNTY, TN (SCHD) — Last night, at approximately 6:45 p.m., the Valero Memphis Refinery at 2385 Riverport Road experienced an unplanned MLGW power interruption, that affected much of the Memphis area. According to Valero, the power failure disrupted regular crude oil refinery process operations triggering Valero’s flare system. During the resulting burn-off process, Valero released excessive confined gas to reduce pressure on the refinery system, increasing flames and smoke.

The Health Department is monitoring the situation and working with Valero. Valero will send a preliminary report to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Memphis-Shelby County Local Emergency Planning Committee, and the Shelby County Health Department within ten days. SCHD will review the information and investigate the incident further within 30-45 days after receipt of the report.

CONDADO DE SHELBY, TN (LPL/SCHD) — Anoche, aproximadamente a las 6:45 p. m., la refinería Valero Memphis en 2385 Riverport Road experimentó una interrupción de energía eléctrica MLGW no planificada que afectó gran parte del área de Memphis. Según Valero, la falla de energía interrumpió las operaciones regulares del proceso de refinería de petróleo crudo, lo que activó el sistema de antorchas de Valero.
