US crosses 900,000 confirmed Covid-19 deaths

Washington DC, Feb 4 (EFE).- The United States crossed 900,000 confirmed deaths from Covid-19 on Friday, after a surge in infections caused by the Omicron variant, according to the tally maintained by Johns Hopkins University.

The last 100,000 deaths were recorded in the last two months.

At 5pm on Friday, the university counted a total of 900,334 deaths since the start of the pandemic from the virus in the US, which has recorded the most fatalities in the world.

The total number of cases stands at over 76 million, which is again the highest in the world, followed by India and Brazil.

President Joe Biden said in a statement that the country now has more tools than before to save lives and fight the virus, and stressed that vaccines were the most important of them all.

The bleak milestone comes at a time when Covid-19 infections have fallen over the past few weeks, although cases remain high with respect to other times of the pandemic and there is a rising trend in deaths.

The average weekly cases in the US has dropped from nearly 790,000 on Jan.12 to about 378,000 on Feb.2, according to the latest data from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

However, cases remain much higher in the country than before the Omicron variant arrived around the beginning of December, with a weekly average of around 100,000 fresh infections. EFE
