World’s largest book fair opens to public in Frankfurt

Frankfurt, Germany, Oct 18 (EFE).- The Frankfurt International Book Fair, the largest of its kind in the world, opened its doors to the public on Wednesday.

Slovenia will take over from Spain as the Guest of Honor at this year’s event, the 75th edition of the fair.

Last year’s event, the second to be held without restrictions related to the Covid-19 pandemic, saw 180,000 people visit the sprawling Frankfurt fairgrounds (Messe), where the fair is held each year.

Frankfurt is considered the world’s largest platform for copyright negotiations, which is what gives the fair its international significance.

The Fair also has an eye on the general public, on the one hand with the guest of honor country’s programs and, on the other, as a platform for debates and discussions.

Current world affairs often have an impact on the Fair so that, in addition to the literature and publishing sector of the guest of honor, a second thematic axis often forms around topical issues in various discussions.

Last year the theme was Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, while this year the situation in the Gaza Strip has already begun to play a key role at the Fair’s press conference and the opening ceremony.

Another current issue of concern to the publishing sector is that of artificial intelligence and the repercussions of its use in terms of respect for copyright.EFE
