Delta variant will represent 90% of Covid-19 cases in EU by August’s end

Copenhagen, Jun 23 (EFE).- The Delta variant of the coronavirus will account for 90% of the new cases in the European Union by the end of August, the European Center for Disease Control said on Wednesday.

One dose of the vaccine does not protect people against this variant, the preliminary data shows.

It is “likely” to widely spread this summer, especially among younger people who have not been vaccinated, the ECDC warned.

“This could cause a risk for the more vulnerable individuals to be infected and experience severe illness and death if they are not fully vaccinated,” the Stockholm-based EU organization said in a statement.

“Too many individuals” are subject to developing severe symptoms without vaccination or preventive measures, it added, recommending the second jab be timely administered.

“The good news is that having received two doses of any of the currently available vaccines provides high protection against this variant and its consequences,” the statement read.

“However, about 30% of individuals older than 80 years and about 40% of individuals older than 60 years have not yet received a full vaccination course in the European Union,” it added. EFE
