Round up: Spain records under 100 deaths as Italy prepares to reopen eateries

Madrid Desk, May 17 (efe-epa).- Spain recorded under 100 coronavirus deaths for the first time in two months on Sunday as restaurants in Italy prepared to reopen with lockdown measures easing across the country.

In other news in Europe, Belgium was preparing to reopen schools this week and Russian authorities declared the outbreak had stabilized in all regions of the country on Sunday.

SPAIN

Spain, one of the world’s worst-hit countries by Covid-19, registered the lowest daily number of coronavirus deaths for two months on Sunday with 87 fatalities in the last 24 hours, according to health authorities.

It is the lowest number of deaths since 16 March, when 21 deaths were registered, and the lowest death toll since the lockdown and state of alarm was decreed.

The number of confirmed new cases in the last 24 hours was 421, a significant decrease compared to Saturday when 530 were recorded.

The total number of infections in Spain stands at 277, 719, of those 146,446 have recovered.

ITALY

In Italy restaurants were preparing to reopen on Sunday.

Italians will be able to visit a local trattoria or osteria for the first time in months on Monday, despite things being far from normal still.

The country is well known for its love food and dinky restaurants where customers sit at tables in close proximity to each other, but as venues prepared to reopen major changes to the distribution was underway.

Restaurants will only be able to host small groups and tables will have to be apart in keeping with safety measures.

Plastic shields have been erected in order to provide further separation between customers.

So far Italy has recorded 224, 760 infections, of which 122,810 have recovered. The death toll stands at 31,763.

BELGIUM

Schools in Belgium are preparing to restart classes on Monday, although not all students will return at the same time due to strict measures issued by the National Security Council to prevent a Covid-19 outbreak.

At the Sacred Heart school in Ganshoren, in Brussels, only second and sixth-grade secondary school students will return, as well as sixth-grade primary school students.

Children will be divided into groups of eight per classroom and must keep safety distances both in class and at recess.

“It will be mandatory to wear a mask, a social distance of at least 1.5 meters will have to be maintained and frequent hand washing with hydroalcoholic gel will be necessary,” head teacher Jean-Marc Zocastello told Efe.

Arrows have also been placed on the ground to ensure students move around the building safely and breaks have been scheduled at different times.
