Pressure mounts for Johnson resignation in wake of Sue Gray report
London, Feb 1 (EFE).- Boris Johnson is trying to “save his own skin”, opposition leader Sir Keir Starmer said on Tuesday, after a report into a series of alleged parties at his Downing Street residence that broke Covid-19 lockdown rules said his government was guilty of “failures of leadership and judgment” and that “some of the events should not have been allowed to take place.”
But despite the findings from the highly anticipated report by senior civil servant Sue Gray, the prime minister has ignored calls from the opposition to resign, instead promising to “sort out” Downing Street’s leadership structures, which Gray said were “fragmented and complicated”.
Johnson, who is in Ukraine for talks amid fears of a Russian invasion, promised he would publish the full report after the police investigation was over.
The Metropolitan Police are currently investigating 12 gatherings, including three in which Johnson was allegedly present, which allegedly breached lockdown rules.
A number of Tory MPs said they were waiting for the full report by Sue Gray to decide on his leadership.
Deputy prime minister Dominic Raab defended the prime minister and said that although justice should be met, Johnson had acted in “good faith”.
Meanwhile, Tory MP Andrew Mitchell said the prime minister was causing “great damage” to the party.
An updated version of the report will be released once the police investigation is over, Downing Street said. EFE
