US officers kill intruder at Peruvian ambassador’s home

Washington, Apr 20 (EFE).- Secret Service agents fatally shot an intruder Wednesday at the Washington residence of Peru’s ambassador to the United States, authorities said.

Uniformed members of the Secret Service, which has responsibility for protecting foreign diplomats as well as US senior officials, arrived at Oswaldo de Rivera’s home shortly before 8:00 am after the occupants reported hearing the sound of windows being smashed, Metropolitan Police Department Chief Robert Contee told reporters.

The officers found the man holding a “metal stake” outside the rear of the residence and moved to take him into custody.

They initially tried to subdue him using their Tasers, but the electroshocks had no effect, the police chief said.

“Ultimately, the officers ended up pulling their service weapons, firing shots” and the man was pronounced dead at the scene, Contee said.

He said the intruder looked to be in his late 20s or early 30s.

“The Ambassador, his family, the Residential staff and the secret service agents are safe, and the fact is being investigated by the competent authorities,” the Peruvian Embassy said in a statement.
