Global Covid deaths increase by 3% for first time in nine weeks
Geneva, Jul 14 (EFE).- Following a decline in Covid-19 deaths for nine consecutive weeks, global coronavirus fatalities increased by 3% this week compared to the previous week, with over 55,000 reported deaths, according to the World Health Organization.
Global coronavirus cases also increased by 10% in comparison to the previous week, with nearly 3 million cases reported from July 5-11, bringing the total Covid-19 cases to 186 million since the pandemic began, the WHO report showed.
The regions that recorded the highest increase in coronavirus infections are the Middle East and Europe, which reported a 25% and 20% increase respectively.
Africa, which registered only a 5% growth in cases, is the region that reported the highest increase in deaths related to Covid-19, with a 50% hike from the previous week.
South Asia reported a 26% increase in coronavirus deaths, the WHO said.
The highest numbers of coronavirus cases were reported in Brazil, India, Indonesia, the United Kingdom and Colombia.
The WHO warned that Covid-19 poses a serious public health risk globally and urged countries to continue with their vaccination schemes.
“While almost a quarter (24.7%) of the world’s population has received at least one dose of a Covid-19 vaccine (over three billion doses administered), there are vast inequities in vaccine distribution and administration with the majority of vaccines administered in a small number of high and upper-middle-income countries,” the report said.
