Rock version of Carmen takes stage at Tokyo Opera

Tokyo, Jul 3 (EFE).- A rock, purest Amy Winehouse style version of the French composed Carmen opera was inaugurated at the Tokyo Opera on Saturday to attract younger generations.

From a double stage and on a giant screen, French mezzo-soprano Stéphanie D’Oustrac – dressed in polka dots and a miniskirt – sings of bohemian love and dances like Amy Winehouse, accompanied by a cello that combines classical music with rock.

“Amy Winehouse is a real aesthetic reference that helps us create Carmen,” Catalan producer, Alex Olle, told Efe.

The 21st century version of the classic opera – presented until July 19 – hopes to attract the younger generations, according to the Japanese musical director Kazushi Ono, in charge of the Amy Winehouse-alike Carmen.

“In Japan, there are many fans who opt for a conventional style, but the new generations enjoy the technique and magic,” Ono said.

From flamenco to rock star, Carmen remains a woman who passionately advocates for art, freedom and love, until her tragic end in four acts, an idol of the public.EFE
