China to mediate in Ukraine talks, send aid

Beijing, March 7 (EFE).- Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that Beijing was willing to mediate in negotiations over the war in Ukraine, the Chinese official told reporters at a Monday press conference.

“China is prepared to continue to play a constructive role to facilitate dialogue for peace and work alongside the international community to carry out necessary mediation,” FM Wang said.

Wang added that China’s Red Cross would provide humanitarian aid to Ukraine “as soon as possible.”

The Foreign Minister said that there had already been two rounds of negotiations and that China hoped there would be a third.

Beijing has so far held an ambiguous position and has avoided using the word “invasion” to describe the ongoing war in Ukraine which has entered its 12th day.

The minister said the causes of the situation in Ukraine were very complex and called on all parties to “respect and protect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries.”

Wang said China would continue to maintain a “strategic” partnership with Russia, and that “dialogue and cooperation between China and Europe will bring more stability to an increasingly turbulent world.” EFE
