Tensions soar in West Bank amid more bloodshed
Jerusalem, Apr 11 (EFE).- Tensions in Israel and the Palestinian territories have soared in recent days, with at least four Palestinians killed in the last 24 hours as Israeli authorities conducted arrest operations in response to a recent spate of fatal shootings.
On Monday, a Palestinian minor succumbed to his injuries in hospital where he was being treated for gunshot wounds to his leg.
The 17-year-old victim was shot by Israeli soldiers in the West Bank city of Jenin, Palestinian news agency reported.
The minor was the fourth Palestinian to be killed by Israeli forces in 24 hours.
Israeli soldiers on Sunday night shot another Palestinian man in the town of Al-Khader, near Bethlehem in the central West Bank, for allegedly throwing Molotov cocktails at civilian vehicles.
The victim, 21, died shortly after being shot, the Palestinian health mininstry reported.
Two other Palestinian women were killed by Israeli forces Sunday in separate incidents in the central West Bank.
The shootings occurred after Israeli authorities imposed travel restrictions on the northern West Bank district of Jenin, where arrest operations continued following four fatal attacks in Israel in just over two weeks that have killed 14 people.
Two of the perpetrators of those attacks had lived in Jenin.
Israeli authorities have restricted pedestrians and vehicles from passing to and from the two military checkpoints in Jenin, banning merchants and businessmen with permits from entering Israel and also suspending entry permits for some 5,000 Palestinians living in Jenin.
Akram Rajoub, the governor of the Palestinian city, condemned Israel’s restrictions on movement, calling it “a punishment on all of Jenin.”
Israel has controlled Palestinian borders since the Six-Day War in 1967 when it occupied the territories of East Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza. EFE
