The faces of Watergate’s men and women

Washington D.C., Jun 14 (EFE).- Fifty years on from the Watergate scandal that brought an early end to Richard Nixon’s presidency, the names of its protagonists survive in the collective consciousness of the United States.

This year the US is marking the anniversary of the break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters and its subsequent cover-up with a wealth of media content from books to TV series and exhibitions.

One such exhibition is Watergate: Portraiture and Intrigue, which has been on display at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. since March and runs until September.

The gallery pays tribute to the journalism that exposed the seismic nature of Watergate, according to its curator Kate Clarke.

It pulls together a collection of news photographs, portraits and caricatures of the central characters involved in the scandal, from Nixon himself and the tenacious journalists Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein who broke the story to others who were involved voluntarily otherwise in one of the country’s greatest political crises.EFE
