Infections continue to soar in Russia, German museums braced for reopening

Madrid Desk, May 10 (efe-epa).- The number of coronavirus cases in Russia has surpassed 200,000, a figure that has doubled in the space of 10 days, according to health authorities.

There have also been 1,915 deaths linked to Covid-19.

Health officials said there had been another 11,012 coronavirus cases detected in the last 24 hours, around 42 percent of them asymptomatic, bringing the total number to 209,688. It is now the fourth country on the list of confirmed infections and is nearing the United Kingdom, which has 215,800.

The capital Moscow remains the epicenter of Russia’s epidemic and is one of the world’s virus hotspots. Health authorities registered a further 5,551 cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the regional total to 109,740, more than half the national total.

There were 414 new cases in St. Petersburg.

According to official data, 80 percent of cases have affected people under 65.

Furthermore, some 152 medical staff members have died from the virus, according to a list compiled by an independent medical organization.

Moscow has extended its lockdown until at least the end of May.

The Italian government has approved a decree to revise the conditions underpinning the release and transfer to home arrest of Mafia gang members as a health precaution due to the coronavirus following criticism of the measure.

Some 367 convicted gangsters have been released from prisons and placed in custody at home in recent weeks as the government took efforts to stem the spread of Covid-19 in the prison system, according to the Repubblica newspaper.

Roughly 6,000 prisoners, all with 18 months or less left on their sentences, have been released early as part of the measure.

The government approved a document late Saturday stipulating that judicial authorities will review each transfer to home custody within the first two weeks and then every month thereafter to ensure that the conditions are being met and the move was justified.

The judicial body will remain in constant contact with regional authorities and as soon as an adequate penal institution is available the prisoner will once again be interned.

According to the government, this text demonstrated its commitment to fighting the mafia while respecting the constitution and struck a balance between health and security.
