Real Madrid beat Elche to go 6 points clear atop LaLiga

Madrid, Oct 19 (EFE).- Reigning champions Real Madrid extended their lead in LaLiga Wednesday with a comfortable 3-0 away victory over last-place Elche, who should be grateful to VAR for disallowing a trio of goals by the visitors.

The Blancos improved to 28 points, 6 better than Barcelona, who have a game in hand and will host seventh-place Villarreal on Thursday.

Elche, on 3 points, remain without a win after 10 matches.

Real Madrid grabbed the lead in the 5th minute courtesy of Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema, but the Frenchman’s goal was disallowed for offside.

The reprieve for the hosts lasted only until the 11th minute, when Fede Valverde put the Blancos on the board. David Alaba made it 2-0 in the 26th, only for VAR to detect another offside, and the margin remained one goal at the break.

Benzema saw a second goal disallowed at the hour mark, but his third – in the 75th minute – counted and late sub Marco Asensio scored in the final moments of regulation.

In other games involving teams in the top half of the table, Real Sociedad nipped Mallorca 1-0 to vault over Atletico Madrid into third place, while Real Betis were held 0-0 by Cadiz and trail the Colchoneros on goal difference. EFE
