Early Voting Begins for Shelby County’s May 1st Primary

Para votar, se necesita una identificación del estado de Tennessee.

La votación anticipada del Condado de Shelby finaliza el jueves, 26 de abril, y la primaria será el martes siguiente.

MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) — After months of placing signs and shaking hands, early voting in Shelby County is underway for the May 1st primary. 21 early voting sites are open in Shelby County as voters cast their ballot for important races, including Shelby County Mayor, Sheriff, and commissioners.

Poll workers at the Agricenter tell it’s been relatively slow throughout Wednesday, but there were some bursts of voter activity.

With citizens able to cast their votes at any of the early voting sites, some are already taking advantage.

Shelby County election leaders estimate 60 to 70% of the total votes are cast during the early voting period. That saves manpower and money.

“If everyone had to vote on election day, we would need another 500 to 600 machines, and at $5,000 piece that’s a pretty hefty chunk of change,” said Shelby County Elections Administrator Linda Phillips.

Shelby County election leaders said they dealt with only one minor complaint Wednesday, and determined it was a human error not a machine error.

“What happened is somebody took their finger and tried to swipe on it, so it’s going to vote on the candidate above. It’s not a conspiracy, so just use the stylus,” said Phillips.

Phillips said the machines are nearing the end of their lives, so she reminded voters that the stylus is your friend. Missing the middle of the box with it can accidentally choose another candidate.

“These are old, resistive touch screens. Use the stylus,” said Phillips. “We’re hoping to replace our election equipment, it is nearing its end of life, hoping to replace it in the next several years.”

To vote, you do need a Tennessee state ID.

Shelby County early voting wraps up Thursday, April 26th, and the primary will be the following Tuesday.
