President of ex-Pakistan PM’s party sent into police custody

Islamabad, June 2 (EFE).- A court in Lahore Friday granted police permission to question in custody Parvez Elahi, the president of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party.

Elahi, a former chief minister of the eastern Punjab province, was arrested outside his home the day before on corruption charges.

The Anti-Corruption Establishment filed the petition for Elahi’s custodial interrogation for 14 days.

The agency alleges that Elahi abused his power while serving as the provincial chief minister to benefit his family and friends.

Elahi has denied the allegations.

The arrest is the latest in a series of alleged crackdowns on opposition politicians in the country in a deepening political crisis.

Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has claimed that more than 10,000 workers and supporters, including top leaders, have been rounded up after protests on May 9.

The arrested face charges of criminal intimidation, rioting, and assault on government officials.

Violence swept Pakistan that day after the police arrested the former prime minister on corruption charges.

Mobs attacked police officers and set fire to ambulances, police vehicles, and schools.

Among the places attacked were the military headquarters and other offices in Rawalpindi and the houses of senior military officials.

Khan accuses the authorities, including the all-powerful military, of pressuring his party members to quit.

Khan was ousted from office in a no-confidence vote in April last year.

He has accused the country’s military of helping the then-opposition to remove him from power. EFE
