Iran returns to parital lockdown amid 4th wave of Covid-19

Tehran, Apr 10 (EFE).- Iranian authorities on Saturday imposed a 10-day lockdown in 257 towns and cities considered high risk amid a fourth wave of coronavirus infections.

“Only essential stores” are allowed to open in these cities, vice-minister of health Ali-Reza Raeesi, said, according to the ISNA news agency.

The list of businesses exempted from the lockdown includes food stores, health centers, banks, public transport, as well as large factories, an production and construction workshops.

Meanwhile, cultural centers, theaters, cinemas, sports centers, schools, malls and restaurants will shut for 10 days.

The fourth wave of infections hits the country after Persian new year celebrations, a time of family gatherings.

Over the past 24 hours, the health ministry has registered 19,666 news cases, bringing the total to 2,049,078 cases since the outbreak was first detected in February 2020.

The ministry also reported 193 deaths, bring the overall toll to 64,232. EFE
