Democrats increase Senate majority with Georgia win

Washington, Dec 6 (EFE).- The United States’ Democratic Party increased its majority in the country’s Senate on Tuesday after its candidate won the runoff election in Georgia state, according to projections by US media.

The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times projected that Democrat Raphael Warnock defeated Republican Herschel Walker, giving his party 51 seats in the Senate. The Republicans have 49.

Tuesday’s runoff in the southern state was held after neither candidate won more than 50 percent of the vote in the midterm elections held on Nov. 8.

Despite being one of the most expensive Senate races in US history, the battle between Warnock and Walker has ended up being far less consequential than it could have been, as the Democrats had already secured control of the Senate.

Even if the Republicans had won the runoff, the Democratic Party would have maintained their majority as Democrat and Vice President Kamala Harris has the tie-breaker vote in the Upper House.

The Republicans regained control of the House of Representatives in the midterms, a development that will make it difficult for Democrat President Joe Biden to push his agenda until the end of his term in 2024. EFE
