PSG edge Angers 2-1 on late goal by Mbappe

Sports Desk, Oct 15 (EFE).- Kylian Mbappe converted a penalty with three minutes left in regulation Friday to give Paris Saint-Germain a 2-1 victory over Angers.

Though the win lifted Ligue 1 leaders PSG to 27 points, 9 more than Lens, the performance did little to ease the concerns raised by the capital side’s 2-0 loss to Rennes two weeks ago ahead of the international break.

Even the absence of Argentina’s Lionel Messi and Brazil’s Neymar, who were unavailable due to their participation Thursday in World Cup qualifiers, could not excuse PSG’s failure to capitalize on three great scoring chances in the opening 10 minutes.

Angers withstood the initial onslaught and began to put pressure on PSG at the back, going ahead in the 36th minute on Angelo Fulgini’s goal.

Danilo Pereira brought the hosts level in the 69th minute, heading in a cross from Mbappe.

The score was still 1-1 in the 83rd minute when PSG clamored for a penalty after the ball struck the arm of Angers midfielder Pierrick Capelle as he moved to block a shot by Mauro Icardi.

VAR reviewed the play and advised the referee to look at the replay and a few minutes later, Mbappe was standing over the ball at the spot.

Angers goalkeeper made a fine stop in the 89th minute to deny Georginio Wijnaldum from close range. EFE jv/dr
