Climate activist arrested for scaling Melbourne tower

Sydney, Australia, Apr 28 (EFE).- Australian police arrested an activist from the environmental organization Extinction Rebellion after he scaled the Melbourne Arts Center tower on Friday.

“This morning brave Rebel Brad Homewood spent four hours on the spire of the Melbourne Arts Centre deploying a 15 meter banner to let people know about Occupy for Climate (…) He is now in custody,” Extinction Rebellion’s Victoria group said on Facebook.

Occupy for Climate is an occupation Extinction Rebellion is planning over three days at the end of May in the Melbourne CBD to demand action against the climate crisis.

“The protest was mainly peaceful and one man was arrested following alleged public nuisance offenses, after he climbed up a building. He is assisting police with their inquiries,” Victoria police told EFE.

It said the peaceful protest brought together some 30 people outside the building.

Among the Extinction Rebellion activists were people dressed in red robes and hats with their faces painted white, while others held banners and placards, according to a video posted on the organization’s social media accounts.

“We are in the climate endgame and we need action NOW!” said Extinction Rebellion alongside the video.

The movement, which emerged in 2018 in the United Kingdom and has spread to more than 50 countries, carries out protests and non-violent acts of civil disobedience to demand action to save the planet. EFE
