Israel can supply 10% of gas Europe received from Russia: PM

Berlin, Sep 12 (EFE)- Israel can supply Europe with 10% of the gas the bloc received from Russia last year, prime minister Yair Lapid said on Monday.

“We are going to be part of the effort to replace Russian gas in Europe,” the prime minister said during a joint press conference with German chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin.

“Our capacities are now around 10% of what the Russians exported to Europe last year,” he continued to say, adding that Israel would be ready to supply the bloc with gas starting next year.

Scholz said every contribution counted and stressed that the increase in gas suppliers to Europe would have a positive effect on prices amid a looming energy crisis.

The chancellor added that Germany was promoting the construction of gas import infrastructure to facilitate deliveries from new countries as it tries to decrease its dependence on Russian energy.

“We also need to improve the network to increase the import capacities of southern Europe,” he added.

Lapid is in Berlin to hold meetings on Iran and strengthen bilateral cooperation with Germany.

“This visit aims to conclude the final details of a strategic partnership agreement between Israel and Germany,” he said.

“Some will certainly say that a military partnership between Germany and Israel is a historical irony.

“I consider it to be proof that we have drawn the necessary conclusions from the past, talk does not stop evil,” Lapid added. EFE
