Fatal shooting at settlement near Nablus as West Bank tensions simmer

Jerusalem, Jul 6 (EFE).- An Israeli man was killed Thursday afternoon in a shooting near a Jewish settlement in the northern West Bank, Israeli medical officials said.

The Magen David Adom ambulance service confirmed to Efe that a young man died after being shot near the settlement of Kedumim, near the Palestinian city of Nablus.

The army said the assailant was shot dead on the spot.

Palestinian Islamist group Hamas, which governs the Gaza Strip, praised the attack, calling it “a response to the Israeli aggression against Jenin”.

The shooting comes a day after the Israeli army ended a massive air and ground operation targeting militants in Jenin, which left at least 12 Palestinians and one Israeli soldier dead, as well as widespread destruction in the city and adjacent refugee camp.

Jenin is considered a stronghold for Palestinian militias.

The operation, which began in the early hours of Monday and concluded on Wednesday, was the largest in the West Bank by the Israeli military since the Second Intifada uprising (2000-2005).

While that operation was being carried out, a Palestinian committed a car ramming and stabbing attack in the Israeli city of Tel Aviv on Tuesday, which left seven people injured.

This year has been the deadliest in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict since the Second Intifada. EFE
