Mid-South Mission of Mercy to Hold Its Eighth Annual Free Dental Care Event; 37% of the Patients in 2022 Were Hispanic

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) — Mid-South Mission of Mercy (MidMOM), a community organization that provides dental care to low-income or uninsured people, will be holding its 8th annual free dental care event in Memphis on January 20 and January 21, at Bellevue Baptist Church’s gym, located at 200 Appling Rd., Cordova, TN 38016. The mobile clinic will open at 6:00 a.m. and patients will be seen on a first come, first serve basis – many patients begin lining up in advance to ensure they are seen.

Among the services that will be provided are cleanings, fillings, and extractions.

“Memphis and the Mid-South have a great need to dental fillings, extractions, cleanings etc. A select few may be able to have a partial to replace missing teeth,” stated Dr. Mitchel Godat, an East Memphis periodontal dentist (Periodontal Associates of Memphis) and the CEO of Mid-South Mission of Mercy.

Dr. Godat also mentioned during an interview with La Prensa Latina Media that this year they will be using a 3D printer to print partials to replace missing front teeth. “Imagine someone being able to smile to get a job and that family picture.”

“Since the beginning, the Mid-South Mission of Mercy’s aim has been to provide immediate care to underserved and uninsured individuals in the greater Memphis area and throughout the Mid-South by alleviating pain caused by dental problems, connecting patients with future dental providers, and educating patients on the importance of good oral health. By providing treatment to patients, without requiring identification/proof of income/proof of residency, etc., MidMOM is meeting a great need in our community – the need for access to dental care. This event is an opportunity for the Memphis Dental Society and Shelby County Dental Society, along with our partners, to provide much needed dental care to members of our community,” said Delaney Williams, the Executive Director of the Memphis Dental Society.

This year, the Mid-South Mission of Mercy mobile clinic, the largest in the country, seeks to serve around 1,500 people.

According to Williams, the mobile clinic served 1,200 patients last year, out of which 37% (444) were Hispanic. It is for this reason that there will be several registered interpreters (Spanish/English), and it is expected that more bilingual people will join as volunteers as well.

It should be noted that, since 2016, the Mid-South Mission of Mercy has provided over $6.9 million worth of dentistry to more than 11,000 patients in the greater Memphis area with the help of nearly 10,000 volunteers.

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) — Mid-South Mission of Mercy (Misión de Misericordia del Medio Sur/MidMOM, por sus siglas en inglés), una organización comunitaria que provee asistencia de salud dental a personas de bajos recursos o sin seguro médico, estará realizando su octavo evento anual de asistencia dental gratis en Memphis durante los días 20 y 21 de enero del presente año en el gimnasio de la Iglesia Bautista Bellevue, ubicada en el 200 Appling Rd., Cordova, TN 38016. La clínica móvil abrirá a las 6:00 a.m. y los pacientes serán atendidos por orden de llegada –muchos pacientes comienzan a hacer fila con anticipación para asegurarse de que serán atendidos.

Entre los servicios que se estarán ofreciendo están las limpiezas, los rellenos y las extracciones.

“Tanto en Memphis como en el resto del Medio Sur hay mucha gente que necesita empastes dentales, extracciones, limpiezas, etc. La necesidad es muy grande, pero sólo unos pocos pueden pagar para obtener una prótesis parcial con el fin de reemplazar los dientes que les faltan”, indicó el Dr. Mitchel Godat, un dentista periodontal del este de Memphis (Periodontal Associates of Memphis) y el director ejecutivo de Mid-South Mission of Mercy.

El Dr. Godat también mencionó durante una entrevista con La Prensa Latina que este año estarán usando una impresora 3D para imprimir parciales y poder así reemplazar los dientes frontales faltantes. “Imagínate a alguien que pueda sonreír sin pena para conseguir un trabajo o para una foto con toda la familia”.

“Desde un principio, el objetivo de Mid-South Mission of Mercy ha sido brindar atención inmediata a personas desatendidas y sin seguro de salud en el área metropolitana de Memphis y en todo el Medio Sur, aliviando así el dolor causado por problemas dentales y refiriendo a los pacientes con futuros proveedores dentales; también educamos a los pacientes sobre la importancia de una buena salud oral. Al proporcionar tratamiento a estos pacientes, sin requerir identificación/prueba de ingresos/prueba de residencia, etc., MidMOM satisface una gran necesidad en nuestra comunidad: la necesidad de tener acceso a la atención dental. Este evento es una oportunidad para que la Sociedad Dental de Memphis y la Sociedad Dental del Condado de Shelby, junto con nuestros socios, brinden la atención dental que tanto necesitan los miembros de nuestra comunidad”, dijo Delaney Williams, directora ejecutiva de Memphis Dental Society (Sociedad Dental de Memphis).

Para este año, la clínica móvil de Mid-South Mission of Mercy, la más grande del país, busca atender gratuitamente a unos 1.500 pacientes.

Según Williams, dicha clínica móvil atendió a 1.200 pacientes el año pasado; de estos pacientes, el 37% (444) eran hispanos. Por lo mismo, para esta nueva ocasión se contará con varios intérpretes (español/inglés) registrados, y se espera que se integren más personas bilingües como voluntarios también.

Cabe destacar que, desde el 2016, Mid-South Mission of Mercy ha proporcionado más de $6,9 millones en odontología a más de 11.000 pacientes en el área metropolitana de Memphis; esto con la ayuda de casi 10.000 voluntarios.
