Israel Covid-19 cases surge as citizens receive 4th vaccine dose

Jerusalem, Jan 4 (EFE).- Israel Tuesday reported 10,644 cases of new coronavirus infections in the past 24 hours as the country rolls out a fourth vaccine dose, which has already been administered to more than 25,000 people.

While Israel registered a daily record of cases back in early September with 11,345 infections, numbers are expected to hit a new high this week amid the rapid spread of the highly contagious Omicron variant.

The rate of infections has tripled over the past week even though the number of serious cases has not risen at the same speed, as it went from 85 to 117,38 people currently on ventilators.

On the other hand, the number of people receiving the fourth dose was no short of remarkable, after a total of 26,400 received their fourth Pfizer booster jab since the start of the nationwide campaign on Monday, while nearly 100,000 are waiting their turn.

“This is a very, very contagious variant, as we can see. The morbidity rises and jumps every day. The best answer is the vaccine,” said the director of the Israeli Ministry of Health, Nachman Ash, after receiving his fourth dose.

Ash added now that the fourth dose has been approved, Israel is confident that the vaccine is its best defense option in dealing with the outbreak. EFE
