Arsenal stymied by Newcastle; Man United thump Bournemouth

Sports Desk, Jan 3 (EFE).- Arsenal were forced to settle for a 0-0 draw Tuesday against Newcastle United, but still extended their lead atop the Premier League to 8 points, while Manchester United rolled 3-0 over Bournemouth to tighten their grip on fourth.

Dropping points at home for the first time this season, the Gunners are on 44, 8 better than Manchester City, though the defending champions have a game in hand.

While the Magpies and the Red Devils are level on 35 points, Newcastle, undefeated in their last 13 matches, sit third in the table thanks to better goal difference.

Second only to City in scoring, Arsenal could not break through the league’s stingiest defense, despite enjoying 67 percent possession and outshooting Newcastle 17-8.

Visiting goalkeeper Eddie Pope thwarted Bukayo Saka during the hosts’ initial onslaught and came up big again in the 88th minute against Eddie Nketiah.

Arsenal clamored for a penalty when a shot from Granit Xhaka brushed the arm of a Newcastle defender in stoppage time, but VAR upheld the referee’s non-call.

In Manchester, United extended their league winning streak to four with a comfortable victory against 15th-place Bournemouth.

Casemiro opened the scoring in the 23rd minute. Christian Eriksen sent a free-kick into the box and the former Real Madrid man slammed the ball into the roof of the net.

Luke Shaw made it 2-0 four minutes into the second half and Marcus Rashford added a third goal in the 86th. EFE id/dr
