Seoul to launch cloud services with quantum computing

Seoul, Feb 14 (EFE).- South Korea will launch cloud services based on quantum computing and begin test flights of urban air mobility (UAM) vehicles in the Seoul metropolitan areas this summer, the Ministry of Finance said Wednesday.

The government aims to have cloud services based on indigenous 20-qubit quantum computers ready for the second half of this year and a more advanced 50-qubit computing system by 2026, according to a new economic development plan.

This is one of the Seoul’s projects to promote advanced technologies and stimulate the country’s economic growth, which also includes an already announced extensive investment in the construction of a mega semiconductor complex.

Among other areas to explore, test flights of UAM vehicles over the Gyeongin Ara canal, east of Seoul, which links the Han River and the Yellow Sea, will begin in August.

The trials, both in the capital and in the surrounding urban areas, will run until June 2025, as the country does not intend to begin commercial services of this type at least until next year, the ministry said.

“Mobility, quantum technology and bio sectors, among other fields, can serve as a new growth engine for our economy. The government will create tangible results in related projects,” Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok said at an emergency economics meeting where the plan was discussed.

The government also committed to expanding support for key industries, such as secondary batteries, semiconductors, displays and shipbuilding, to ensure technological prowess this year. EFE
