Italian court sentences couple to jail for abusing gay teenage son

Rome, Jan 24 (EFE).- A court in Italy sentenced the parents of a teenage boy to prison for threatening and humiliating him for being gay, local media reported.

The father and mother of the boy, who was 14 years old at the time of the abuse, were sentenced to two years and one year in prison respectively, local newspaper La Stampa reported Tuesday.

The boy’s father was charged with mistreatment and his mother for failing to prevent the abuse, which occurred between 2020 and 2022.

The couple was granted conditional suspension of their sentence but was ordered to undertake psychological and remedial therapy at an accredited institution, La Stampa reported.

The parents of the teenager, who will turn 18 years old in six months, have accepted the sentence handed by the local court.

They had learnt about the boy’s sexual orientation by reading his diary and had decided to “correct” their son through prohibitions and punishments.

The boy’s father forced him to run half-naked at night, have relationships with girls and even gave him an ultimatum to prove that “he had slept with a girl.”

He also obtained access to his son’s social media profiles to track his movements and control whom he met, La Stampa reported.

The parents had also consulted a psychologist to help their son, but the professional had refused to treat the boy and had explained to his parents that homosexuality was not an illness, the newspaper reported.

The teenager finally confided in a school psychologist, who notified the authorities. EFE
