Italian, Israeli secret agents among 4 dead in Italy boating accident

Rome, May 30 (EFE).- Two Italian secret agents and a retired Israeli Mossad agent were among the four who died when a boat capsized in a lake in northern Italy over the weekend, Italian authorities said on Tuesday.

Four people died when a boat carrying 22 people and two crew members overturned on Lake Maggiore, in Italy’s northern Lombardy region, due to a severe storm at around 7.30 pm on Sunday.

Authorities from Italy’s Intelligence services named the Italian agents as Claudio Alonzi, 62, and Tiziana Barnobi, 53, and said that they were on the boat to celebrate the birthday of one of the group.

The Israeli retired Mossad agent was identified as Shimoni Erez, 50, Israel’s foreign ministry confirmed.

The Israeli consulate in Rome was working with Italian and Israeli authorities to bring the body back to Israel, Italian media reported.

The fourth victim was Anya Bozhkova, a Russian national and wife of the owner of the boat, who rented it out to tourists.

All the other passengers who were on board the ship were also Italian or Israeli and, according to local media reports, some were members of the secret services.

The majority of those on board either swam ashore between the towns of Lisanza and Piccaluga or were rescued by other boats.

Five were transferred to hospitals, while 15 others were treated on the spot.EFE
