The World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest).

L. Holt, presidente y director ejecutivo del Festival Internacional de Memphis in May.

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) — After a successful weekend with the Beale Street Music Festival, the organizers of Memphis in May are preparing to hold another of their most iconic and famous events, the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest.

“This Beale Street Music Festival marked the forty-third year for Memphis in May in Tom Lee Park and reaffirmed the fact that there’s nothing like great music in this one-of-a-kind setting to draw people to downtown Memphis,” said James L. Holt, President and CEO of Memphis in May International Festival. “Now we turn our attention to the next signature event in our lineup, the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest, and welcoming tens of thousands more visitors and Memphians alike to enjoy another feature of Memphis culture on the banks of the Mississippi River.”

Nearly 250 teams, from over 25 states and 6 countries, will be participating this year, including the Memphis Latin Porkers, who return for the fourth consecutive year seeking to win some of the prizes. Each of these teams will be competing in different categories, such as the best ribs, the best whole hog, shoulders, and patio porkers.

Regarding the Memphis Latin Porkers, they will be competing again in the “Whole Hog” category, using the Chinese box as their traditional cooking method and adding a delicious blend of Latin flavors along with those from the “Home of the Blues,” in addition to that smoky touch that was missing last year in order to succeed.

According to Pedro Velasquez, one of its creators and leaders, the Latin team will have this time the collaboration of more than 30 members, including a large number of sponsoring companies, among which are Dar Salud Care, Dar Salud Management, Dar Salud Pharmacy, La Caja China Roasting Box, Radio Ambiente 1030, Agavos, Soccer City, Sabor Caribe, Davos on the Delta, James Stiles (Sure Title Company), and McKesson, to mention just a few.

Among the members of the team, one can see that there are people of different nationalities and cultures, a feature that defines very well the Memphis Latin Porkers’ vision of bringing communities together for the benefit of all.

“The purpose of the BBQ Fest is to integrate the communities,” said Velásquez, adding at the same time that the Memphis Latin Porkers are looking to present an interactive concept that invites people to pass through their tent and not only feel that connection with the culture of the city but to learn more about the Latin culture and cuisine as well.

The World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest is a family event where thousands of people, including residents and tourists, will have the opportunity to meet again for four days and taste the best of the best in terms of pork barbecue, all while enjoying live music and other special activities. In its 42nd year, the festival/contest will take place from May 15 to May 18 at Tom Lee Park (Downtown).
