Taiwan to compensate family of girl who died from Covid-19

Beijing, Feb 27 (EFE).- The Taiwanese government will compensate the family of a girl who died days after receiving the second dose of the Covid-19 vaccine with TWD 3.5 million ($114,100), local media reported Monday.

This case was included in a list published by the Taiwanese Health Ministry detailing the beneficiaries of compensation for having suffered adverse reactions after being vaccinated against various diseases, including the new coronavirus.

Lo Yi-chun, spokesman for the island’s Epidemic Center, said the requirements to be compensated were only met in a dozen of the 118 cases received by the Vaccination Damage Compensation Program instituted by the Ministry of Health, according to Taiwanese state news agency CNA.

The largest of the compensations is the one the family of the minor will receive, who was in the range of five to 11 years old and went into a coma three days after receiving the second dose of the Pfizer vaccine.

The girl, who died shortly after, suffered “fulminant myocarditis,” said Lo, who added that this pathology is usually caused by a viral infection, so it is unlikely that it was due to the vaccine she had received, as it was a of the mRNA type (known as messenger RNA.)

Although the spokesman said there is no medical evidence the girl died as a result of the vaccine, he also said the possibility cannot be excluded due to the short time elapsed between the inoculation and the death of the little girl.

The Taiwanese Ministry also compensated people who suffered adverse effects after receiving AstraZeneca and Moderna vaccines, and the BCG. EFE
