France to protect Jewish community after Paris stabbing

Paris, Sep 27 (efe-epa).- France will increase security to protect its Jewish community in the wake of the Paris Charlie Hebdo stabbing, the country’s interior minister announced on Sunday.

Gérald Darmanin said there will be extra security against extremist terrorists after an attack near the former offices of satirical magazine on Friday.

The minister visited a synagogue in Boulogne-Billancourt, a city bordering Paris, on Sunday ahead of the start of Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement.

He said more than 7,000 police and soldiers have been deployed to protect Jewish services over the weekend.

“I have asked the Paris police chief to step up security at a number of venues, including those that may be symbolic,” he added.

These locations will include the former Charlie Hebdo headquarters, which was the scene of a jihadist attack in 2015 in which 12 people were killed.

There will also be reinforcements at 774 Jewish centers, such as synagogues and schools, the minister said.

“Jews in particular are the target of Islamist attacks,” he added.

The announcement came two days after two people were seriously injured in a knife attack in the French capital.

The victims were both journalists who were smoking outside the building where they work at a television production company.
