Crypto contract: Messi’s PSG deal includes fan tokens

Paris, Aug 12 (EFE).- Lionel Messi’s contract with Paris Saint-Germain includes a “large number” of the cryptocurrency fan tokens, a first for such a high-profile signing, the French club said Thursday.

The cryptocurrency initiative, pegged to the Chiliz blockchain provided by Socios.com, can be purchased and traded by fans in exchange for merchandise, club experiences and voting rights on minor topics.

Ahead of Messi’s move to PSG from Barcelona on Tuesday, $PSG Fan Tokens were trading at volumes worth $1.2 billion, the club said in a statement.

“Fully embracing Socios.com and $PSG Fan Tokens has proved a massive success for the Club. We have been able to engage with a new global audience, creating a significant digital revenue stream,” said Marc Armstrong, PSG’s chief partnerships officer.

More than 40 top-flight teams offer their own Fan Tokens through the same platform, including Barcelona, Juventus, AC Milan, Manchester City, Arsenal and Atlético Madrid.

PSG in 2018 became the first sporting brand to link up with socios.com. EFE
